Dr Tasioulas Mill, Utilitarianism
challenge to impartial benevolence encroaches on our capacity to live valuable lives (Williams)
distribution also matters, as well as maximisation distribution does not necessarily mean equality
people have certain kinds of rights, which:
cannot be done to them
cannot be expected to do
justice/rights artificial distinction, but it can be made
Mill: justice = realm of perfect obligations
i.e. correlative right held by assignable right-holder(s)
does the 3rd world collectively hold a right to our benevolence?
Mill: the right to equality = a need
victimless crimes???
we live in a rights-obsessed culture
any obligations have to be paired with rights
imperfect obligations: marginalised or attacked
e.g. devalues mercy, charity (no mercy: either one complies with justice or not)
are my rights violated by a poker cheat?
- contract right?
justice vs human rights
HR = narrower field
concerns: rights re autonomy + freedom
